The love for TV and my Mumu

Tonight TV One is broadcasting the NAACP Image Awards.  I am looking forward to watching it with my snacks and one of my very comfortable mumu’s.  Aren’t mumu’s for old ladies?  Heck no! In fact, they are perfect for doing some serious long term TV watching.

Some of my fondest memories are of being seated in front of the TV at my grandmothers house   watching scary movies and eating Jiffy Pop popcorn.  (I liked Jiffy Pop because that is what they gave away as consolation prizes on the Price is Right and most game shows in the 70’s, so I figured it was good)  Later as a pre-teen, I loved Saturday nights at my Dad’s house because my sister and I got to watch Saturday night Live in our PJ’s with some Doritoes and a can of soda.

In both of these scenarios, I’m wearing very comfortable clothes and well, I was quite younger and much more flexible than I am now.  Sitting on the floor for long periods of time was no big deal.

When I got to college, I never had time to sit and blob out in front of the TV. When the VCR was introduced to the world, I was ecstatic.  I could see “Dynasty” whenever I wanted and never again had to rely on anyone to fill me in on what happened on  the soap “All My Children”.  My attire was sweat pants and t-shirts.

Now that I am a bit older, I have fallen in love with the Mu mu, or if we’re being classy, the Caftan.  They are marvelous for TV watching and snacking. Pick a color or design you like, pull it over your head and it drapes your body, hides the fat and does not restrict.  What you wear under it is up to you.  Men, (if any are reading this)  you too, can wear a mu mu……except They’re called kaftans or long night shirts.  I think I’ve seen the red plaid flannel version.

So tonight, I will be watching host Anthony Anderson  honor the best and brightest persons of color while comfortably clad in my mumu.

Ok, let me warm up some homemade chili and cornbread and enjoy the show.
