Its the holiday season and TVOne has already put coal in my stocking. News One now with Roland Martin has been canceled. The last newscast airs December 21st. In a statement, TVOne says the show didn’t generate enough revenue for it to continue in its current format and will premiere another news show in a different format in 2018. They say Martin will be a part of it. Mmmmm hmmmm *evil side eye* NewsOne now is not a polished newscast, but it had an impact on the black community and was a breeding ground for African American journalists, lawyers and political commentators. I will miss this show tremendously.
Taraji P. Henson’s 3rd annual White Hot Holiday on Fox was a warm and funny family friendly variety show for the holidays. “People know me as a dramatic actress,” Henson said. “This gives me a chance to have some fun.” Ciara was a burst of dancing energy opened the show and Salt and Pepa wowed me, rhyming with an effortless flow. Titus Burgess hilariously appeared as Baby Jesus with Taraji as his mama in a skit where they were receiving gifts from the 3 Kings. Leslie Odom Jr, and Faith Evans sang a beautiful version of “Mary Did You Know.” I miss good variety shows.
I was all excited to watch the next episode of ABC’s Great American Baking show. They were gonna make gingerbread houses! Then ABC cancelled the show over sexual harassment allegations. So I ran over to The Cooking Channel to see what Patti LaBelle and Tia Mowry were baking.
I spent New Years Eve watching Dick Clark on ABC’s New Years Rocking Eve for years. After Clark died and Ryan Seacrest (yuck!) took over, I watched Carson Daly. He’s reasonably cool, knows music and had better musical guests. Plus, Tamron Hall co-hosted a couple times. Fox has stepped up and you could party in the New Year with rapper Pitbull. That was good stuff. This year? Fox is foisting Steve Harvey on us to ring in the new year. Really Fox? Pitbull is probably busy helping Puerto Rico but y’all couldn’t find anybody else? *facepalm*
There is a free preview on YouTube of the new Showtime series “The Chi“. Creator and Emmy award winner Lena Waithe presents a fantastic drama about my hometown and neighborhood, the south side of Chicago. It’s really good y’all. Check it out.
